Position Responsibilities Overview for Interested Candidates

Our Mission, Vision, and Purpose

Mission: To develop new and maturing followers of Jesus Christ
Vision: The transformation of the Adrian community
Purpose: To share God’s love with all persons in the Adrian community

Primary Objectives of the Position

  1. Build up and equip persons to lead and serve (Ephesians 4:12), especially in the area of music and worship
  2. Provide musical leadership at weekly Sunday worship which honors God and builds up the worshiper in heart (grace) and head (understanding)
  3. Effectively administer, oversee, and lead our worship band, SoulStation

Primary Areas of Responsibility

  • Worship [see end note] leadership at our Open Doors Worship (Sunday’s at 11am)
  • The Worship Design Team
  • Communications with team members, staff, and congregation

Character, Leadership, and Position-Specific Qualities

  • Personal faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; able to clearly articulate
  • Personal commitment to being a servant leader under the guidance and supervision of the Pastor
  • Agreement with and commitment to the Mission and Vision of Adrian First UMC, approaching our music ministries as a means of achieving them
  • Demonstrates a high level of personal integrity and a commitment to continued growth as disciple of Jesus Christ
  • Works well as part of a team of leaders, and can effectively lead and develop teams
  • Knowledge of and passion for the style of music of our main mission field, while also having an appreciation for and willing to incorporate traditional musical styles on occasion
  • Works and leads out of an articulated philosophy and/or theology of worship and music
  • Comfortable and effective leading worship in its various aspects
  • Commitment to excellence (not perfection) and the work of honest evaluation that ensures us offering to God our very best

Required Music Skills and Experience

  1. Demonstrable proficiency playing a lead musical instrument, preferably piano
  2. Has effectively led a worship musical ensemble/band
  3. Exudes sincere enthusiasm as a worship leader
  4. A lead singing voice (not necessarily a soloist voice)
  5. Conversant with secular and Christian musical trends and styles, and in favor of using a variety of current and earlier contemporary Christian and popular spiritual music during the worship service
  6. Able to work off of lead sheets and sheet music
  7. Capable of arranging music for different instruments and musical styles
  8. Able to play in a variety of keys (being able to transpose on the spot is not necessary)
  9. Able to arrange congregational songs to that they are easily singable

Other Helpful Skills and Attributes

  • Possesses a working knowledge and understanding of digital sound boards and sound systems
  • Organized (especially helpful!)
  • Healthy interpersonal communications skills

Job Responsibilities Overview

Leadership Development

  1. Recruit and train worship leaders
  2. Identify gifts and skills of people in the congregation and enlist them to serve for the purpose of supporting the music ministry
  3. Recruit volunteer musicians from within the congregation; as needed, reach out into the community and used the musical gifts and skills of persons outside of the church (band members, special music soloists, etc.)

Music and Worship Leadership

  1. Weekly lead the Open Doors Worship in a manner that glorifies God (provide leadership for all but the message)
  2. As possible, arrange for others to provide appropriate leadership in the event of the Worship Leader’s absence
  3. Effectively lead weekly SoulStation rehearsals and Sunday run-through
  4. Periodically evaluate rehearsal and worship effectiveness through honest feedback; make adjustments as necessary
  5. Work with sound and video volunteers to ensure high quality worship support
  6. Choose music that is appropriate and singable

Administration & Oversight

  • Plan and rehearse music with enough advance time that the band is comfortable playing/leading
  • Provide the office with appropriate bulletin information
  • Provide song lyrics to volunteer who creates the weekly presentations
  • Ensure that the platform area is organized as needed
  • Ensure that the sound and video systems are shut down after use
  • Stay on top of all communications
  • Participate in a weekly one-on-one with the pastor
  • Developing upon availability, participate on the Worship Design Team
End note: In the context of the gathered community on Sunday morning, we speak and think of “worship” as the entirety of the sanctuary experience, from prelude to postlude. In some traditions, worship refers to the opening time of singing. We see that time of singing as one part of the overall worship experience. Worship includes singing, praying, hearing and responding to the proclamation of God’s Word, receiving the sacraments, sharing personal testimonies, etc. The Worship Leader plays an important role in helping guide and lead the congregation through the whole service, not just the music portion.

Other Important Information

Reporting Relationship: reports to the Lead Pastor

Experience and Education: candidate must have experience and be able to document effective worship leadership, both in leading a band and leading a congregation. There is no minimum educational requirement.

Hours: 10 hours/week

Compensation: $10,000
