Years ago a certain credit card company tried to appeal to a particular socio-economic group of people with the slogan, “Membership has its privileges.” Joining their exclusive club set you apart from everyone else, and it came with privileges that only members enjoyed.
Well, it’s different here. A lot different. Membership at First United Methodist Church doesn’t come with privileges. And it certainly doesn’t set you in a class ‘above’ or ‘apart’ from everyone else. If anything, membership here comes with responsibilities and commitments. In other words, it’s not about what the church can do for you, but what you can do for the Kingdom of God.
Our goal is not to make church members, but to make disciples of Jesus Christ. In the process of growing as a follower of Christ, you might eventually come to the point where you want to express your commitment to Christ (and his Church) by becoming a member of this congregation. If so, you will likely participate in a 6-week class, after which you will stand before the congregation during worship and take your membership vows. All members of The United Methodist Church make a verbal commitment to support the work of the local church through their:
- Prayers
- Presence
- Gifts
- Service
- Witness
